Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you want to know about the Masonic AI Lodge — from joining to what happens at a meeting.
About the Lodge
Not at all. The Lodge welcomes Freemasons at every level of technical knowledge — from professional AI researchers to those who are simply curious about what artificial intelligence means for the world. Our intellectual programme is designed to be accessible and stimulating at every level.
Yes. The Masonic AI Lodge is a fully constituted Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England, Metropolitan Area. We work the degrees, observe the ceremonies, and operate under the full jurisdiction of UGLE. The difference is what we talk about at the festive board.
At Freemasons' Hall, 60 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5AZ — the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England. We meet four times a year: in February, May, September, and November.
The annual subscription is £150–£200 per annum. This covers your Lodge fees and the festive board at each meeting. There are also one-off UGLE registration fees for new initiates.
Joining
Yes. We welcome candidates who are new to Freemasonry. You will be initiated through the First Degree, and progress through the Second and Third Degrees. The process is explained on our Membership page.
Yes — and we particularly welcome Master Masons as Founding Brothers. You will need to complete sections A and D of Form M, show your Grand Lodge Certificate to the Secretary, and your application will be put to a ballot of the Lodge.
Form M is the UGLE standard application for membership. You can complete it online on our Form M page. New candidates for initiation complete Sections A, B, C, and D. Master Masons joining the Lodge complete Sections A and D only. Sections E, F, and G are completed by the Lodge officers separately.
For Master Masons joining, the process is relatively straightforward — your Form M is submitted, a ballot is held at the next meeting, and if successful you are proposed at the meeting following. For initiation candidates, the process takes longer as you must progress through the three degrees.
Meetings
A typical meeting runs from 6:00 pm to approximately 10:15 pm. The Lodge is opened formally, ceremonial work is conducted, we hear the AI Address (a structured presentation and discussion on a specific AI topic), and then adjourn to the festive board for dinner, toasts, and fellowship.
Yes, remote attendance is supported for brethren who cannot attend in person. Full Masonic dress must be worn and you must be in a private location. Remote attendance for degree ceremonies requires the Worshipful Master's approval.
The AI Address is a structured presentation and discussion at each meeting, led by a member or invited guest with expertise in a specific aspect of AI — whether technical, ethical, legal, or philosophical. It takes place in the Lodge, after the formal working and before the festive board. It is frank, off-the-record, and at a level that respects the intelligence of the audience.
