About the Lodge
The Masonic Artificial Intelligence Lodge — who we are, why we exist, and what we stand for.
A Lodge Unlike Any Other in England
The Masonic Artificial Intelligence Lodge was founded on a simple but profound observation: the questions that artificial intelligence raises — about power, ethics, truth, identity, and the future of work — are exactly the kind of questions that Freemasonry has always been concerned with.
We are a regular Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England. We work the degrees. We keep the ceremonies. We maintain the traditions of the Craft that have endured for three centuries. But at our festive board, and in our Lodge of Instruction, we address a question that no lodge has addressed before: what does artificial intelligence mean for humanity, for society, and for the values we hold as Freemasons?
We are not a technology club with a Masonic veneer. We are a Masonic Lodge with a singular intellectual purpose.
Dr Nick Lockett
The Lodge was founded by Dr Nick Lockett — barrister, higher rights solicitor-advocate, partner at AAIRO LLP, and founder of CAAIRO (the Centre for the Assessment of AI Risk and Opportunity) in Westminster.
Nick has spent much of his career at the intersection of law, technology, and public policy. He is a practising Freemason with deep knowledge of UGLE regulations, ritual, and lodge administration. The Masonic AI Lodge is his attempt to bring together two worlds that have much to learn from each other.
Sapientia Per Rationem Artificiosam
Our motto — Sapientia Per Rationem Artificiosam — translates as Wisdom Through Artificial Reasoning. It captures both our Masonic purpose (the pursuit of wisdom) and our distinctive character (the application of artificial intelligence to that pursuit).
